Sophisticated, classy, fun, edgy, flirty and eclectic. That’s the chic magic behind Tara Trotter’s personal style. Flair spoke to the fashionista about her entrepreneurial pursuits.

Trotter is the beauty behind the clothing brand Marie Elaine, a line which exudes versatility and uniqueness through custom-made garments. “My designs range from swimsuits, suits, bomber jackets to formal gowns,” she told Flair.

The self-taught fashion designer is no stranger to creating trends. She has been mastering her needle and thread to fabric technique for the past 10 years. “I got my first sewing machine in my teenage years. And I took great pride in wearing something that I made. Thereafter, I would design for friends, family and eventually clients,” she added.

Nurturing her discovered passion, she went on to move from Jamaica and pursue her career in fashion in 2017 at The House of Sanchez, a tight-knit fashion school in Boca Raton, Florida. The programme, she said, took her skills and mindset to a whole new level. Three years in the profession, and Trotter could not be any happier about her design decision.

Already, she has developed signature looks to shop: the brocade women’s pants suit and plunge neckline minidress. According to her, there is nothing more powerful than a woman in a tailored suit. The brocade fabric is recognised as representing luxury and wealth in various countries.

But on the flip side of that conservative choice, she believes that a woman should be allowed to dress in a sultry manner without being judged by society. Hence the incorporation of plunge necklines in bodysuits, swimsuits and evening wear. “I cater to the more mature woman so I find that my design aesthetic is now more reserved. I often get customers who are looking for dresses to wear to church and formal events.” As her business makes progress, she is grateful for a growing client base.
