Emancipation Day is a declaration of freedom for this beautiful country. For many, it is a reminder to eliminate mental shackles and break those emotional chains. But Denecia Green isn’t afraid to add a little sensual bondage to the mix. She explores this lascivious liberation and so much more in her latest novel, Lust, Love and Lockdown.

Sex, infidelity, love, betrayal and deception. With the whole world adjusting to this new normal, Green decided to pull from the pandemic life for her new book. Having experienced the built-up frustration of not being able to go out, she used fictitious characters to relay real-life drama. The book features two friends living two separate lives, exploring how they navigate relationship struggles. One character, she says, is married and is no longer having a colourful sex life; the lockdown only worsens this disconnection. However, the other character’s love life is so festive, it is enhanced by the lockdown, sending them into baby-making season. Readers are given insight into how they deal with sexual, emotional, and financial matters while getting accustomed to the new normal.

The author explained that she didn’t see herself writing books. Five books later, she is still trying to adjust to the title. “Writing, for me, was always a way of relaxing or a form of expression,” she told Flair, noting that she made jottings in journals or scribbled on anything she could get a hold of, just for fun. With everyone seeing the author within her, she was encouraged to put everything in a book. And so the story began.

This avid reader found herself on a journey of self-discovery on this quest, since at heart, she is a true fan of memoirs or inspirational literature, not erotic novels. After garnering experience writing sex and relationship columns for local newspapers and magazines, she realised that sex sells. And because it was entertaining to her, why not become the vessel creatively transporting others into a world filled with passion and carnal desire?

She dove headfirst into romance with Lies, Sex & Betrayal and Love, Lies & Temptation, Sex Lies and Dirty Laundry, as well as Sex Lies and Dirty Laundry 2, before making her last sultry stop at Lust, Love and Lockdown.

“Persons gravitate towards my books because they are relatable. Even though my novels are fictional, my writing pattern is inspired by true events. So I guarantee that you will be able to relate to at least one theme conveyed,” she revealed. But the journey has been far from easy.

There have been moments where she had to ghost family members and friends in order to make a deadline. She had to take a break from social media due to the toxic nature of the space and the horrors of the pandemic. There were times of writer’s block. And she is grateful for her fans who pushed her to get her last book up and running after two years of trying.

LEARNING BALANCE

And more importantly, Green had to learn how to incorporate quality time with loved ones while working. This balancing act includes being a pharmacist by day, a content creator on YouTube by night, and an author in-between time. “My YouTube channel is a platform used to educate and entertain viewers as we explore the uncomfortable truths about sex and relationships. They may also see bedroom hauls, sex toy reviews and interviews with medical professionals, as sexual health is equally as important,” she added.

So what’s next for this creative? A yearning for her book to hit the big screen. If not a movie, she would settle for skits or sitcoms exploring her narratives and bringing her characters to life. On a more personal note, starting a family is next on her agenda.

ADVICE

Her advice to aspiring authors is to just write. “Don’t worry about whether what you are writing makes sense or how you are going to print or publish. Those things will fall in place. The hardest part is always getting started. Focus on your craft and own it. Trust the process.”

Her books are available at D.O.R Pharmacy (Spanish Town), UWI Bookshop, Greater Portmore Pharmacy, York Pharmacy, Gift Galore Docucentre & Bookstore (Ocean Village Shopping Centre), Fetish Secretz and on Amazon.
