I’ve always seen fashion as a beautiful form of self-expression, reflective or indicative of mood or overall personality. I had no celebrity couture icon growing up; there was no need. My style inspiration was always right at home. And trust me when I say my mother is known for turning heads with her stunning and jaw-dropping fashion. It’s for that reason that as I considered style selections for an out-of-town trip, I decided there was no one better to combine creative forces with.

“I think fashion is very personal, so it’s whatever works for you. It’s all about being true to your own personality. When you feel good about what you’re wearing, you automatically ooze confidence,” my mother, Donna Moodie-Anderson, shared as we discussed the fashion assignment which took us to Portland, specifically a chic boutique on West Street in Port Antonio: Shem’s Designs. She also highlighted that fashion encompasses stepping outside of your comfort zone, having a little fun and being sexy.

Shem’s Designs had a galore of statement pieces in store, and we wasted no time in picking and choosing trends that spoke to our souls. When the store owner and fellow fashionista, Shem Dixon, arrived on the style scene, she was excited about the selections. She gave her expert opinions on particular looks that would represent the season.

We obliged to a fitting, and in no time we were rocking winning looks at the Errol Flynn Marina, Dixon included. Bold colours, enticing stripes and fabulous floral patterns were placed on brilliant display in long and elegant, and short and flirty dresses and sets, some boasting edgy cut-outs, sensual splits and irresistible ruffles. My mom was so impressed by the long green, orange and white floral skirt suit that she purchased it and wore it to an out-of-town wedding.

These pieces definitely covered casual and formal packing essentials for an out-of-town trip. Other necessities making mommy’s travel list include heels and sandals to accompany the casual and formal attire, and “swimwear, I never leave home without them; the one time I did, I ended up at the beach, so better to have it and not wear it than not have it at all. Sunglasses, and by extension sunscreen, to protect your skin; we’re living in the tropics, so that’s always a must. Make-up, including ‘lippies’; bring in the colours, blues greens, pinks, purples.”

Donna Moodie-Anderson makes the cover of the February 7 edition of ‘Flair’.
